John Stossel from 20/20 just wrote an <a href="http://www.townhall.com/columnists/JohnStossel/2008/06/18/legalize_all_drugs?page=1" rel="nofollow">editorial </a> on why drug legalization is good. He addresses several popular myths, and uses cigarette addiction to point out the fallacy that legal drugs would cause more crime than illegal drugs.

It is sad how cities like Baltimore are so devastated and I believe that the drug war has played a big part in causing urban crime and poverty.

Hi Kevin, Yes Jekyll is a remarkably beautiful place and it is a state park! In 1947 the state of Georgia bought the island from the millionaires and made it into a state park with a mandate that the park be affordable and accessible for the average Georgian. The people of Georgia take this mandate seriously and feel a strong sense of pride that this island, once the playground of only the richest in the country is now owned by "the plain people of Georgia" as recorded in the Georgia Code. Here is the rub. The Jekyll Island Authority, appointed by Governor Sonny Perdue has begun a beachfront project on part of the 35% of the island which by law can be developed (the remaining 65% must stay undeveloped.) Well, the development proposal put forth by Linger Longer Communites (the wealthy Mercer Reynolds is the company owner and BIG campaign contributor to Perude, former finance chair to George W. Bush and now finance chair for Senator McCain) would have the public beachfront turned into a condo community complete with time shares and a 400 room luxury hotel. (They do plan to build a 125 "economy" hotel at the western most end of the project. Guess what? Linger Longer Communities does not have to buy that pristine oceanfront land. The leases to the Jekyll Island Authority will be paid for by those who buy the condos. Good deal for a developer. Imagine the profit margine...beachfront land you can develop for free! Good-by to affordablity and accessibility.

Linger Longer Communities and the Jekyll Island Authority have touted this development to be environmentally friendly yet the JIA did not do environmental impact studies nor did they determine the legal implications of the Shore Protection Act, Marshland and Wetlandds Protection Acts BEFORE issuing an RFP to the developers AND they fought against legislation that would have protected the island's natural assets and maintained accessibility for all to enjoy the beachfront, not just those who can afford the "beach village" proposal.

People from all over Georgia, in fact all over the country have joined the Initiative to Protect Jekyll Island (www.savejekyllisland.org) supporting responsible redevelopmeent of the island as opposed to the massive devellopment proposed by the Jekyll Island Authority which will encroach on the public's accessibility to their state park beach, the environmental assets of the island (beach and maritime forest.) Please visit the website to get involved in this important effort.
Kevin, You praised the natural beauty of the island. I hope those visiting this site will join in the effort so that natural beauty will be available to all visitors for generations to come.

Thank you for the opportunity to share this information with others.

I agree- the more you read about this topic, the further it goes, so I just wanted to shed a little bit of light on the circumstances under which this particular reserve bank was created.

Unfortunately, there is just as much myth and conspiracy out there, as there is real fact and information. I'm nothing approaching an economist, so I'll leave that commentary to the experts.

There's a lot more to this story. Consider all the worthless money they print. It reduces the value of all our money -- inflation. This valueless money is loaned out to people and countries who then become indebted and can lose everything. The interest on this fake money flows by the billions into the accounts of the cartel of bankers who control the purse strings--the federal reserve bank. They will soon own this country, will have to send in UN peacekeepers and will probably loan us some money to save our economy, just like all the other third world countries. Notice even as the third world is unable to service its debt, the US comes to the rescue and pays the bills with our tax money sent straight to the cartel. Clever fellows. They make billions with no investment nor risk of any kind.

With the REAL ID Act, and the previous enactment of the US Government of putting chips in our passports, we can refuse to use any identification documents that threaten our individual security and civil liberties. It is a huge sacrifice for an individual - you will have trouble travelling by airplne because of non-compliant documentation, and you may face fines and jail time for driving with an expired license - but if real change occurs as a result, the reward will be amazing: you will be freer!

Very well reasoned post. Calling for human decency and human equality as bedrock values upon which national decisions are made is all too rare, despite rhetoric about defending 'our way of life' which appears to mean nothing so much as convenient shopping..or as the Sicilian might say " I do not think that phrase means what people think it means."

Unfortunately, the United States government including both major political parties appears to have allowed our country to become indebted to China, et al.. and possibly feels it NEEDS the oil in Iraq and probably Iran in order to once again become a creditor nation rather than a debtor nation. All other explanations (including attacking Iran for Israel's security, etc) just aren't sufficient to explain the foray into Iraq and the chomping at the bit to go into Iran.

Again, good post.

Consortium for Fuel Cycle Production: Iranian Invitation

Iranian government has invited other nations to participate in their nuclear fuel cycle production. The United States and Israel demand that Iran must stop all nuclear fuel activities; they assert that Iran may divert from fuel production (less than 5%) and enrichment (more than 80%) uranium for nuclear bomb production. To allay this concern, Iran has invited the United States and other nations to participate as members of nuclear fuel consortium. Iran is a member of Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) of the United Nations, and thus subject to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regulations.

IAEA is responsible to demonstrate compliance with NPT requirements by inspection, on site active and remote monitoring of all aspects of the operation. In addition, presence of non-Iranian scientists and engineers participating as members of consortium would deter any unauthorized nuclear fuel enrichment Iranian activities. Iran has also accepted additional protocol for unannounced IAEA inspection.

IAEA has indicated that Iran is in compliance with the NPT requirements; we want Iran to stay in compliance in the future. We must not create conditions that force Iran to develop nuclear bomb, such as threats from US and Israel.

Unless we could suggest a better procedure than an international consortium for fuel production in Iran, we should support the Iranian invitation and join them.

I suggest the following two books:
"Deception Pakistan, the United States, and the Secret Trade in Nuclear Weapons" by Levy and Scott-Clark and

"Danger and Survival, Choices about the bomb in the first fifty years" by McGeorge Bundy

Please join us to demand elemination of all nuclear bombs. President Truman said: "Starting an atomic war is totally unthinkable for rational men." [Truman, public Papers]

"I believe that the intent of the founders was to create the ultimate of the many checks and balances in the Constitution via this amendment."

You don't have conjecture about the intent of the founding fathers on the 2nd amendment. The anti-federalists papers (written by those in favor of a bill of rights, including Patrick Henry) explains their intent quite clearly. I don't understand how gun laws and full-out hand gun bans fits with "shall not be infringed."

Here is their 17th proposed amendment -

17th. That the people have a right to keep and bear arms; that a well-regulated militia, composed of the body of the people trained to arms, is the proper, natural and safe defence of a free state; that standing armies, in time of peace, are dangerous to liberty, and ought to be avoided, as far as the circumstances and protection of the community will admit. And that, in all cases, the military should be under strict subordination to, and governed by, the civil power.

(My fiance blogged about this here http://ralree.info/2008/3/19/that-the-people-have-a-right-to-keep-and-bear-arms )

I'm relatively new to the MD area and I've had a little culture shock with regards to the role of government keeping everyone "safe."
I can't think of a home in my Alaskan neighborhood that wasn't armed. Half my high school friends were on the school riflery team. I remember people walking around downtown Anchorage with new weapons from a gun show - the only controversy was one of animal rights vs. hunting.

I'm glad to know I'm not alone in this state :)
